Local Grief Support
Memorial Funeral Homes sponsors several programs throughout the year to assist their families with the grieving process after the loss of a loved one. These groups operate under the Community Connections name, and we encourage you to sign up for our newsletter to keep up to date with the calendar, click the link at the bottom of the page. Our grief support program is under the direction of Maria Rege, M.Ed. Maria has been with our organization since 2004 and is responsible for all of our outreach programs. Please read the calendar below to see what groups are coming up. Maria will also spend time individually with the families we have served, guiding them through unique circumstances and issues.

Our Aftercare program was developed over 15 years ago and remains the only program of its kind on Aquidneck Island. What began as a 6-week education and support group to meet the needs of our grieving families now reaches out to the entire community with a wide variety of groups, workshops and resources for managing grief, adjusting to loss and finding hope.
Building Bridges, our 6-week support and education group provides an opportunity to learn about grief and its effects while sharing support and understanding. Many of our family members have found this foundation group to be greatly reassuring and comforting. This group is offered free to the entire community through our partnership with VNS Hospice of Newport and Bristol Counties.
Side by Side, our loss specific support and education series provides an opportunity for people with like losses to meet, share and learn about grief issues and coping strategies specific to the loss of a child, spouse, sibling, sudden death or suicide. These groups are offered free to the community as a service of our Aftercare program.
Heart to Heart, our children's bereavement project provides services to grieving children and those who care for them. Our action oriented group meets monthly providing children an opportunity to explore confusing emotions, build coping skills and find themselves less alone in their grief. Stories, art, games and gab make this a safe, comfortable group for all! This group is offered free to the community as a service of our Aftercare Program. In addition we are available to parents and caregivers to discuss your concerns, provide information and resources and/or to meet with children 1:1 as needed.
Beyond Words, our monthly experiential workshop and seminar series focus on issues pertinent to our families and the community at large. Topics on our 2007/08 calendar include, Cooking for One, Stress Management, Alternative Paths to Healing, and Container Memory Gardens.
