Frank Nekrasz

Frank Nekrasz, 85, of Portsmouth, RI, died comfortably and peacefully on Saturday, February 11, 2017, while visiting family in Mahomet, IL. Mr. Nekrasz was born December 21, 1931 in Wilkes-Barre, PA. He was the son of the late Frank and the late Tekla (Samoulis) Nekrasz. He was married to Johanna (Joan) M. Stachowski, for 52 years. She preceded him in death on January 6, 2009. He was also preceded in death by all six of his siblings: John, Stella, Ann Adam, Joe and Madeline.He is survived by four sons: Frank Nekrasz, Jr. and his wife Keri, of Mahomet, IL, Raymond Nekrasz and his wife Sarah of Portsmouth, RI, Douglas Nekrasz of Ayer, MA and Eric Nekrasz and his wife Karen of Lewisville, TX. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren: Frank Nekrasz, IV, Kooper Lenz, Stephanie Nekrasz, Alexandra Nekrasz, Sam Nekrasz, Kyle Nekrasz, Raymond Nekrasz, Jr, Katie Nekrasz and one great grandchild Liam Buckhardt along with many nieces and nephews.Frank graduated from GAR high school in Wilkes-Barre, Pa in 1949. Frank wanted to travel and enlisted in the Navy on October 4, 1949, with the lure of a "round the world" cruise. He went to Recruit Training in Great Lakes Naval Station, Great Lakes, Illinois, and Naval Sonar School in Key West, Fl. After graduating from Sonar School, he was assigned aboard the USS A.M. Sumner, DD692, the USS Hank, DD 702, and was an instructor at the Naval Sonar School, in Key West. In addition to the ships already listed, he was also assigned aboard the USS Sea Owl, SS 406, USS Van Voorhis, DE 1028 and the USS Bennington, CVS 20. He received his Commission as a LT on November 1, 1963, and was transferred to the Fleet Reserve as a Master Chief Sonar Man, and retired as a LT. Frank served proudly and honorably in the Korean conflict and Viet Nam war. After retiring from the Navy, he worked for Raytheon Corporation in Portsmouth, RI as a Senior Quality Control Engineer. Frank continued to travel extensively and enthusiastically for Raytheon until his retirement in 1992.Dad was a fearless and hardworking provider on behalf of his wife and sons, a doting JaJa to his beloved grandkids, a loving Father-in-Law to his 'daughters,' and a compassionate caregiver to his beloved wife, Joanie, until her death.Gone to sea, we have the watch.Calling Hours will be held on Friday February 17, 2017 from 4-7pm in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. His funeral will be held on Saturday February 18, 2017 at 10am in the funeral home, burial will follow with military honors in Portsmouth Cemetery, Turnpike Avenue in Portsmouth.
