Frank Raposa, 96, formerly of Immokalee Drive, Portsmouth, died Thursday, April 21, 2016 at Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown, RI. His beloved wife of 50 years, Alice A. (Medeiros) Raposa preceded him in death.Born in Portsmouth, RI, on December 19, 1919, he was the son of the late Jesse and Maria (Cabral) Raposa. Frank was a lifelong Portsmouth resident, and as a young man began his career with the former Nunes Motor Company. Frank joined the United States Navy and served in World War II, spending time with the Seabees and a Marine Corps detachment, as well as some time in the Pacific. He was a professional chauffer for Vaucluse Farms and Mrs. Diana Ryan. He travelled throughout the US and Canada with Mrs. Ryan showing her prizewinning cattle at livestock shows. He was also a driver for Mr. George Widener of Philadelphia. He was a member of the Middletown Council Knights of Columbus, 3rd Degree, and loved working at the Bingo nights, and meeting so many new people. Frank was a faithful communicant of St. Barnabas Church, where he was active with many activities at the church, including past chairman of the Church Festival, as a regular altar server, and Eucharistic Minister. He was also past chairman of the St. Anthony's Feast at the Portuguese American Citizen's Club; and a member of the American Legion, Portsmouth Post. Frank and Alice travelled to many countries and they enjoyed meeting many people along the journey.He was preceded in death by his six siblings, John Raposa, Jesse Raposa, Antone Rapoza, Manuel Raposa, Josephine White and Mary Alvarnas. Uncle Frank is survived by many nieces and nephews, including Alfred Raposa of Portsmouth, Elizabeth LaPierre of Middletown, and Beverly Raposa of Sunrise, FL, and many more.Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 from 4:00-8:00pm in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.His funeral will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2016, at 9:00am from Connors Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. Burial with Military Honors will follow at St. Columba Cemetery, Brown's Lane, Middletown.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.
