Mrs. Lena M. Bettencourt, age 91, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, passed away on July 26, 2018, in the comfort of her home and in the company of her loved ones. Lena was born in Middletown, RI on August 20, 1927 to the late Joseph Santos and Maria (Braga) Santos. She was the wife of the late John J. Bettencourt.
Mrs. Bettencourt was well known as a peoples’ person, known to many by her nickname, “Lee”; she loved bringing family and friends together and enjoyed the company of those she loved, in particular, her late husband John, and her three daughters. Lena had a few favorite hobbies, some of which included: collecting salt and pepper shakers, her dominoes group, to which she was an avid player; she also had a love for cooking as she was always seen wearing her favorite apron as well as a love for gardening, giving her home the same warm welcoming feel as she gave all those she encountered; there was always something cooking in the crockpot.
Lena is survived by her three daughters, Linda Mello and her husband Jeffrey of Portsmouth, Sharon Jenkins of Virginia Beach, VA and Marie Levada and her husband Alan of Middletown. She is also survived by her brother, Antone Santos, her four grandchildren: Jennifer Viveiros, Gregory Levada, Benjamin Jenkins, and Alison Levada, as well as her two great grandchildren: Sarah and C.J. Viveiros; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Lena was predeceased by her siblings, Manuel Santos, Alice Vidinha, Joseph Santos, Gladys Barry, and Mary Lopez.
Her funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at 10:30AM at St. Barnabas Church, 1697 E Main Rd, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
Burial will take place in the St. Columba Cemetery
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Child and Family Services on 31 John Clarke Rd, Middletown, RI 02842.
