Arthur Edward Shaffell

December 2, 1928 ~ October 27, 2017 (age 88)
Arthur Edward Shaffell, 88, of Middletown, RI died peacefully at home on Friday October 27, 2017. Born on December 2, 1928 in Newport, RI, he was the son of the late Frank and Mabel (Garceau) Shaffell. Arthur is survived by his wife of 65 years, Agnes B. (Cloud) Shaffell.

Arthur attended Newport Schools prior to joining the U.S. Navy at age 17 and became a Class "A" Carpenter/Builder for the United States Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees). He was awarded World War II Victory and Good Conduct medals for his service.

Arthur and Agnes were married at Jesus Savior church on October 25, 1952. He was a communicant of St. Lucy's Church and a 50 year active member of the Middletown Knights of Columbus.

Arthur was a member of IBEW Local 99 for 64 years. He worked for G & H Electric in Newport, RI for 21 years before finishing his 47 year career, retiring from Bell Electric in Providence, RI in 1990.

After retirement, Arthur and his wife Agnes volunteered their time at the Newport Salvation Army Soup Kitchen and with the Newport Kiwanis Club during fundraising events that were held at the Newport Yachting Center.

He was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed watching the New England Patriots. In addition, Arthur liked working on many different home projects.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his children Arthur R. Shaffell and his companion Maureen Davidson, Edward J. Shaffell and his wife Mary Gleason and Sharon A. Shaffell, all of Middletown, RI.

Arthur was predeceased by his sisters Florence Shaffell, Alice Kaull, Margaret Moffitt, and his brothers Frank and Norman Shaffell. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and his sister in law Margaret (Peggy) Deery.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday October 31, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Jesus Saviour Church, 1 Vernon Avenue, Newport, RI 02840.

Burial to follow at St. Columba Cemetery, Browns Lane, Middletown, RI.
