With deep sadness-and more than a few smiles as we remember him-we announce the unexpected passing of Albert T. Roach III on the morning of April 16, 2026, at the age of 61. A cherished son, brother, and friend to many, he leaves behind a lifetime of stories, laughter, and unforgettable moments.
Known lovingly as "TR" to his family and "Al," or "Big Al," to his many friends, he had a way of making himself known in any room-usually within five minutes, and often with a story too crazy to be true.
Born on December 26, 1964, in Newport, Rhode Island, TR was the son of Albert T. Roach Jr. and Jane A. Roach, and the grandson of Stanley P. and Jeanne M. Brown. He grew up on Ruggles Avenue in Newport, where Aquidneck Island served as his playground-and where it's safe to say he covered just about every inch, usually on two wheels.
A graduate of Rogers High School and New England Technical Institute, TR was truly a man of many talents-some officially trained, others self-declared but enthusiastically practiced. His lifelong love of bicycles began early through his family's business, Ten Speed Spokes in Newport, and it never slowed down. That passion carried into countless adventures, from carving down mountain foothills on a snowboard to motocross racing and mountain biking.
TR will be remembered for his infectious laugh, generous heart, adventurous spirit, and his uncanny ability to turn an ordinary day into something memorable. He lived life fully and rarely sat still for long.
He is survived by his parents, Albert T. Roach Jr. and Jane A. Roach of Newport; his sisters, Lisa Trainor and Lauren Gregarczyk; his nephew, Andrew; his niece, Kendra of Middletown; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly- and who will likely be retelling his stories for years to come.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Bike Newport (bikenewportri.org)-a fitting way to keep TR's spirit rolling forward.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Knowing TR, it will be less of a quiet gathering and more of a proper send-off.
