Alfred "Dodo" Sutton Jackson

Alfred "DoDo" Sutton Jackson, 91, of Newport, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, April 26, 2017. Mr. Jackson was born August 24, 1925 in Newport, RI. He is the son of the late Howard and the late Ida Mae (Lopes) Jackson. He was the husband, of 72 years, of Ella Virginia (Netter) Jackson.Dodo worked for Swan Cleaners for many years, until its closing, after which he worked for Del Nero's Cleaners. Dodo was a lifelong member of the Prince Hall Masons. In his youth, he played baseball and softball on the "Beavers" team in Newport. He was an avid bowler for many years in the Outer World Bowling League. He was also very active in the Newport Softball League as an umpire. More importantly, he was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.Mr. Jackson is survived by his wife: Ella Virginia (Netter) Jackson and his children; Lawrence Jackson and his wife Sherry of Reedy SC; Laraine Page and her husband Clarence, of Newport RI; Michael Jackson and his wife Florence of Newport RI; Raymond Jackson and his wife Kathleen, of Derwood MD; and Shirley Smith of Grand Prairie TX. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, and cousin Joseph Spears, many nieces and nephews.He is preceded in death by his siblings; Howard Jackson, Florence M. Gray, Lillian Stewart, Carol Greer, Yvonne Lopes and Marlene Ray.Calling hours will be held on Friday May 5, 2017 from 4pm - 8pm at the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway in Newport.
