Alicia Marie Hicks

Alicia Marie (Augustus) Hicks, 69, a devoted mother, abuela, sister, co‑worker, and friend, passed away on July 21, 2026, after a brief battle with cancer, with her son Joseph and his partner Lauren by her side.

Born in Newport, Rhode Island, on October 19, 1956, Alicia grew into a lifelong worker whose greatest joy was helping others. She began her working life at the Newport Creamery during her high school years. After attending Salve Regina University for a short time, she embarked on a long and dedicated career with the Middletown Public School System, where she worked alongside her best friend, Joyce Reagan. Together, they kept the office running with precision, discipline, and humor-often described as "boot camp," but always filled with heart.

Upon retiring from the school system, Alicia immediately began her second career as the Activity Director of the Village House Nursing Home. Her passion for supporting both residents and staff was unmistakable. During the COVID‑19 pandemic, when staffing shortages were severe, Alicia went back to school to earn her CNA certification so she could assist the nursing staff directly. Her commitment was so profound that she often worked continuous shifts-sometimes up to 72 hours-to ensure residents received the care they deserved.

In addition to her full‑time roles, Alicia also held second jobs at Trembly's Restaurant and Tommy's Diner, somehow finding the energy to give her best wherever she went.

When her son was young, Alicia remained deeply involved in his athletic activities, proudly serving as a wrestler's mom and volunteering with Pop Warner. She held many positions over the years, ultimately serving as the president of the Middletown Little League.

Alicia was a devoted board member of the Vasco Da Gama charitable organization, always ready to raise her hand and volunteer for any function. A faithful parishioner of Jesus Saviour Church, she could be found at the 7:30 a.m. Sunday Mass with her friends, week after week.

Alicia will be remembered as a caring, loving, and steady influence who took immense pride in her work and found purpose in service. Though she received numerous accolades throughout her life, she rarely spoke of them; her satisfaction came from knowing she made a difference.

Above all, Alicia cherished her family. She is survived by her son, Joseph Hicks III and his partner Lauren; her beloved grandchildren, Cataleah, Bella, and Tyra; and her siblings: Lawrence Augustus Jr. (Eileen), Elizabeth Hicks (Ralph), Ronald Augustus (Karen), and Janice Tasso (Jim). She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who affectionately called her Auntie Sunshine. Alicia was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Alice Augustus.

Funeral will be on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at 8:30am from Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. A Memorial Mass will begin at 10:00am at Jesus Saviour Church, 509 Broadway, Newport.
