Anna Ruth Vellenga Wood, 81, of 398 Bellevue Avenue Newport, formerly of 147 Kay Street and Calvert Street, Newport, died Tuesday, August 27, 2002 at Heatherwood Nursing And Subacute Center Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late William H. Wood Jr. Born in Bellefontaine, OH on July 13, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Frank S. and Jennie Geising Vellenga.Mrs. Wood was a 1939 graduate of Bellefountaine High School and a 1944 graduate of St. Elizabeth?s School of Nursing in Washington, DC. From 1944 to 1950 she worked as a psychiatric nurse at St. Elizabeth?s Hospital in Washington and from 1966 to 1972 she was a registered nurse at the Newport Hospital, retiring in 1972. Mrs. Wood was a communicant of St. Joseph?s Church, a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, a volunteer at Newport Hospital for many years and she also volunteered as the scorer for the Newport National Little League. She is survived by two sons W. Michael Wood of Newport, RI, and Dr. R.Patrick Wood of Houston, TX, her daughter Jennifer Collier of East Stroudsburg, PA, a brother Robert Vellenga of Willoughby, OH, two sisters Dorothy Kelsey and Winnifred Patterson both of Bellefontaine, OH, and six grandchildren.She was the mother of the late Timothy H. Wood and the sister of the late John Vellenga. Her funeral will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2002, at 9:00am, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00am, in St. Josephs Church, Broadway And Mann Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown. Donations in her memory may be made to the Newport Hospital Building Fund, 11 Friendship Street, Newport, RI 02840.
