Arthur Joseph Turner Jr. of Bristol, RI (formerly of Portsmouth, RI) died on 15 August, 2024 at the age of 94. He was the son of Arthur Joseph Turner of Fall River, MA and Bridget (Harrington) Turner. Arthur is preceded in death by his sisters Helen Furze and Christine Bettencourt.
Born on July 4, 1930 in Fall River, MA, he attended Durfee High School and earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at Bradford Durfee Tech. He worked as a mechanical engineer for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) for 32 years where he met his wife Claire Turner. After retiring from Government service he worked for Aquidneck Data Corporation (ADC), Aquidneck Management Associates (AMA), and Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). He served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard for 10 years.
Arthur was a member of St. Mary's church in Bristol. He enjoyed working in the yard, helping around the house, staying fit, and watching sports. He enjoyed watching the New England Patriots, Boston Celtics and New York Yankees. He participated in sports in his younger years, fencing in college and playing semi-pro football in Middleboro, MA. He was also a member of NUWC bowling teams. Arthur and Claire participated in neighborhood Bocce leagues for many years.
Arthur loved being with family. He is survived by his wife, Claire, sons, Joseph and Patrick Turner, daughters, Mary Turner, Rachelle Croteau, and Carolyn Machado, grandsons, Colby Machado, Nolan Croteau, Andrew Croteau, and Collin Turner, and granddaughters, Emily Machado and Casey Turner.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2024, from 10:00am-12:00pm at Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Rd., Portsmouth. A Funeral Service will be held immediately following at pm in the funeral home at 12:00pm.
Burial will be private.
