Arthur W. Chip Chaplin Jr., 90, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, passed away on February 19, 2019, at home in Portsmouth, surrounded by his loving family.Chip was born on June 27, 1928, in Newport, RI, to the late Arthur W. Chaplin, Sr. and the late Florence (Luther) Chaplin. He was the husband of the late Dolores S. (Washburn) Chaplin for 67 years, his high school sweetheart and love of his life.Arthur received an Associate's Degree in Architectural Engineering from the YMCA Institute in Providence (Roger Williams University). He served honorably in Korea in the US Army from 1947 to 1949. He then worked as an architectural engineer at Naval Station Newport for many years and for several private architectural firms both before and after his career at the Navy Base.Arthur is survived by his children, Todd Chaplin and his wife Mary Helene of Portsmouth, Peter Chaplin of Tiverton, and Judi (Chaplin) Mendola and her husband Anthony of Lombard, Illinois. He is also survived by his grandchildren, John Mendola and his wife Anna, Andrew Chaplin, Melissa Chaplin, Nicolas Chaplin and his wife Brooke, Meredith Mendola and her husband Nathan Rothwell, and Allison (Chaplin) Mathieu and her husband Jeff, and great grandchildren Brooke, Evan, and Mia Mendola.He loved sailing in his Cat Boat and was a long time member of The Catboat Association. He enjoyed shooting pool with his friends in his later years.His funeral services are private.
