Obituary

Audrey Clinton Oswald was born in New York City May 12, 1933 and grew up as an only child at 1160 Park Avenue. While attending the Brearley School in New York, she and her best friend Iris Love in part, inspired the novelist Nora Johnson, (who also attended Brearley), to write the novel The World of Henry Orient, (which was later made into a movie starring Peter Sellers) - due to their star-struck behavior of relentlessly trailing Ingrid Bergman in an effort to meet her backstage or in her hotel room. Ultimately their antics with Ingrid led them to be seperated, with Iris having to leave Brearley.

After Audrey's graduation from Brearley, she attended Bradford Junior College in Haverhill, Massachusetts. A city girl at heart, she always said the best thing about Bradford was the train to New York. While at Bradford, Audrey met Frank Oswald Jr., who was attending Bowdoin College. They married and had three children, Frank, David and Diana.

Audrey was very close to her many cousins and spent her summers in Newport, RI where she had generations of family on her maternal side. One great grandfather was William Watts Sherman, another was William Shepard Wetmore, who built and lived in Chateau Sur Mer in Newport.

On Audrey's paternal side was the Clinton family who were fundamental figures in the history of New York, her ancestor Governor George Clinton was one of the founding fathers of the United States. In 1977 Audrey made Newport her full time residence relocating from Long Island, N.Y.

Audrey was effortlessly stylish and loved giving parties as much as going to them. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was inclined to speak her mind quite freely. She loved being surrounded by friends and was extremely social. Her favorite activity was to swim in the ocean at Bailey's Beach which she did well into her 80's.

Audrey was predeceased by her two sons, Frank and David. She died peacefully in her home surrounded by family and her wonderful caregivers. She was irreplaceable and will be missed by all who knew her.
