Augustin L. Hunter Jr.

Augustin L. Hunter Jr. 'Gus', 78, of Middletown, died on March 25, 2026, at the Hope Hospice Center in Providence. He was the son of the late Augustin and Matilda (Berluti) Hunter. In addition to his parents, Gus was preceded in death by his nephew, Austin Hunter. He is survived by a sister, Irene Petraca of Cranston, and two brothers, Dennis Hunter of Barrington, and John Hunter and sister in-law, Leanne of Melbourne, FL.

Gus attended St. Mary's school and church and maintained his Catholic faith throughout his life. He studied business at Johnson & Wales and attended D'Angelo's Cosmetology School. He opened Augustin Hair Stylist on Stone St. in the 70's, where his warm and attentive customer care led to lifelong customers who followed him when he moved Augustin Hair Stylist to Middletown.

In addition to his career as a hair stylist, Gus previously worked as the manager at several of the island's theaters. Gus brought his enthusiasm for customer service with working at Dollar Tree, where he enjoyed being active and sociable. Gus loved bringing his productive creativity to his work and relationships and will be missed.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 6 at 8:30am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, follow by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Spring Street, Newport.

Burial will follow at St. Columba Catholic Cemetery, 465 Brown's Ln., Middletown.
