Barbara C. Cormier, age 88 of Middletown, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 9, 2018 at Broomfield Skilled Nursing Home in Broomfield, Colorado.
She was born on March 4, 1930 in Newport, Rhode Island to the late Ernest and Marjorie Champlin of Middletown.
Barbara received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Rhode Island in 1956. She was pursuing a Masters Degree in Plant Pathology when she met her husband William (Bill) and chose to pursue her Mrs. rather than her M.S. degree. Barbara was married to Bill Cormier of Pascoag, Rhode Island for 55 years. They lived in Middletown, Rhode Island from 1960 to 2011 where she continued to live until 2018, 7 years after Bill died.
Barbara endured great emotional strife during her son Brads two-year battle with cancer. Brad died in December 1974, at the age of 13.
During the 1990s and into the early 2000s, Barbara and Bill enjoyed sponsoring naval officer students from foreign countries who attended the Naval War College. She always enjoyed baking and, later in life, volunteering at St. Marthas Thrift Shop. She will be remembered for her delicious homemade fudge which she sold at the annual Holy Cross Lawn Parties.
She is survived by her son Mark Cormier and his wife Marian Branz of Broomfield, Colorado.
She is preceded in death by her sister Beverly Champlin and son Bradford Cormier.
Her funeral service will be held on Friday November 16, 2018 at 11:00 am at the Church of the Holy Cross, 1439 West Main Road in Middletown.
Burial will be at St. Marys Episcopal Churchyard, 324 East Main Road in Portsmouth, following the funeral service.
