Barbara M. Reed

Barbara M. (Mattox) Reed, passed away Saturday, December 24, 2016 during her battle with liver cancer. She is survived by her husband, Arthur L. Reed Jr., their son Alan L. Reed and rescue dogs Chewy and Brigitte. She also leaves her sisters, Jean Prinski Mattox and Sr. Roberta Marie Mattox both of PA, and a brother, Robert Mattox also of PA, as well as a step sister, Christa Hoskensmith of NM. Barbara was the step sister of the late Greg Embick.Barbara was born in Yeadon, PA on April 30, 1950 and was raised in Drexell Hill, PA. She met her husband, Arthur, in Philadelphia on April 24, 1969. They were married on May 2, 1970 and moved to Rhode Island in early 1971. Their son, Alan, was born in September of 1984. Barbara embodied the American Dream; cleaning houses by day while attending CCRI at night, where she received her A.S. in Nursing in 2000. She immediately began working for Newport Hospital, where she remained until her retirement in September of 2016. In 2010 she received her B.S. in Nursing from Salve Regina University. At Newport Hospital, she sat on both the Professional Practice Committee, as well as the Unit Council. Barbara was also one of the founding members of the Sunshine Fund a fundraising action to help staff and patients dealing with hardship. Calling Hours will be held Thursday, December 29, 2016, from 3-7pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.
