Barbara L. Simmons

Barbara L. Simmons, 94, of Newport, Rhode Island, died on October 29, 2026. She was the wife of the late Horace Simmons.

Born in Newport, RI on August 8, 1932, She was the daughter of the late George and Estrella (Gibbons) Jenkins. A lifelong Newporter, she graduated from the Newport Hospital School of Nursing and soon began a career at the Naval Hospital in Newport. She never missed a day of work, and retired after a 40 year career, both as a nurse on the floor and later as an administrator in the nursing department. Outside of work she was a dedicated member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Barbara was also a supporter of several community organizations, especially Turning Around Ministries. At home, she was a dedicated mother and grandmother, and was a supporter and teacher, gently guiding family with her quiet voice, and providing a hearty meal. She will be remembered as the Matriarch of Fillmore Street.

Barbara is survived by her children; Sonya Simmons of Newport, and Horace Simmons Jr. of Warwick, RI, two sisters; Dorothy Saunders, of Gary, IN and Lorretta Jenkins of Newport, and her two beloved grandchildren; Phoenix Simmons and Jada Simmons

Barbara is preceded in death by her husband; Horace Simmons, two brothers; Alton and George Jenkins, and her parents.

Visiting hours will be held at Community Baptist Church, 50 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Boulevard, Newport, RI, on Friday, November 6, from 10:00-11:00am. A funeral service will take place in the same location at 11:30. Burial will follow at RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
