Barbara Wheat, age 91, of Newport, died Friday, May 12, 2017 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown, RI. Mrs. Wheat was born March 13, 1926 in Newport, RI. She is the daughter of the late Henry and Mary Ellen (Shea) James. She met her late husband, Edward Wheat, in Newport while he was serving in the Navy. After they married, they moved to New Albany, Indiana, where she spent most of her adult life. In addition to her husband and parents, she is predeceased by her brothers, Henry James, Rev. Paul James, Kenneth James and her sister, Mary James.She is survived by her sister-in-law, Anita James of Wickford, RI; her nieces, Betty Espanola and her husband, Gerry, of Portsmouth, RI, Maureen Adams and Mary Ellen Thurber; her nephews, Thomas James, Paul James and Kenneth James and his wife, Judith, of Portsmouth, RI. Barbara was a graduate of Rogers High School. All of her life, she loved to visit Battery Park, where she grew up on "The Point." A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday May 17, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Broadway at Mann Avenue, Newport, RI.
