Newport, - Bernie Dew Toppins, Sr., 74, of 16A Edgar Court Newport, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at home. He was the husband of the late Lenora Hicks Toppins. Born in New Holland, NC on December 14, 1928, he was the son of the late Edwin and Maggie Patterson Toppins.Mr. Toppins worked for the former Safe Way of Newport for 15 years, retiring in 1983. He was an avid sports fan especially of the Dodgers. He is survived by two sons Manuel L. Toppins of Providence, RI, and Bernie Dew Toppins Jr. of Newport, RI, three daughters Brenda L. Toppins of Orlando, FL, Laverne Toppins and Lisa A. Toppins both of Newport, RI, two brothers Larry Toppins of Newport, RI, and Raymond Toppins of Baltimore, MD, three sisters Mary V. Clark of Jamaica, NY, Margaret Smith of Newport, RI, and Sarah A. Williams of Baltimore, MD, and his grandson Benjamin Callandret of Newport, RI. He was the brother of the late Charles Toppins.His funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at 11:00AM, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.
