Betty Lou Caldwell, 82, of Newport died Friday, May 13, 2016 at Miriam Hospital in Providence, RI. She was the wife of the late James Perry Caldwell.Born on March 10, 1934 in Newport, RI, she was the daughter of the late Robert Tinsley and Sarah Jean (Alston) TinsleyShe is survived by her siblings, Thelma Greene of Newport, Dorothy (Green) Birch of Charleston, SC and Mary Louise Nicholson of Eupora, MS.Betty worked at Transcom in Portsmouth for many years. She then worked as a CAN at Catherine Manor Nursing Home in Newport. She also worked as a food server in Newport and Middletown public schools.She is survived by her children, James P. Caldwell Jr. of Triangle, VA, Jeffrey Caldwell of Middletown, Bettina Strouble of Columbia, SC, Renee' Caldwell of Newport, Terrance Caldwell of Tiverton, RI, Dainard Caldwell of Nome, Alaska, Lance Caldwell of Newport, many nieces, nephews, fifteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.She was a member of the Stone Mill Masons Lodge, Outer World Duckpin Bowling League, Member of the Martin Luther King executive board, beloved member of Community Baptist Church, and the Newport Branch of the NAACP and also a member of the Black Cultural Arts Committee. Betty Lou loved walking all over Newport, King's Park, singing her heart out in the church choir, collecting rocks and flowers.Betty is preceded in death by her beloved husband James P. Caldwell, Sr., four sisters, Debora L. Greene, Jean Hollis, Bernice Greene Snow, Cecelia Greene, two brothers Thomas Greene and Arthur A. Greene, Jr.Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2016, from 5-8pm in Community Baptist Church, 50 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Boulevard, Newport, RI.Her funeral will be held on Friday, May 20, 2016, at 11am, in Community Baptist Church, 50 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Boulevard, Newport, RI.Burial will be in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, South County Trail, Exeter.
