Captain George Anagnostos of Portsmouth, RI died on Friday, December 15, 2017 at Newport Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 21, 1933 in Manchester, NH, he was the son of the late Apostolos and Anastasia (Kaltsas) Anagnostos. George was the husband of Ellen (Kasiaras) Anagnostos for 60 years.George earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Tufts University in Medford, MA. He was one of two students from New Hampshire selected for the NROTC program at Tufts. He was commissioned an Ensign upon graduation in 1955.Captain Anagnostos career has included a number of assignments and responsibilities both afloat and ashore. Shore assignments included the command of two Naval Reserve Centers; Instructor of Mathematics at the U.S. Naval Academy; and tours at the Naval Command Systems Support Activity and the Bureau of Naval Personnel. He also served as the Atlantic Representative for the Chief of Naval Reserve, coordinating the weekend and annual active duty training Periods for 25,000 Naval Reservists.Afloat assignments included duty aboard the USS Princeton (LPH-5) where he was in charge of deck and boat operations for the Apollo 10 capsule recovery. He also served as First Lieutenant aboard the the USS Kankakee (AO-39); First Division Officer aboard USS Rushmore (LSD-14); and Executive Officer of the USS Hunting (EAG-398).His decorations include the Navy Achievement Medal; Meritorious Unit Commendation; the Vietnam Service Medal with two stars; the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Citation and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Captain Anagnostos assumed command of Naval Reserve Readiness Command Region One in Newport, RI in October 1978. He retired in 1981 after 26 years of service to his country.In retirement, his selfless service continued. He gave countless hours to St. Spyridon Church and to the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA). He was instrumental in the AHEPA Housing Corporations work to provide low income housing across the nation. Over the years, he held many positions in the Order of AHEPA, including District Governor of Yankee District 7; Supreme Secretary of the Order of AHEPA; and copy editor of the AHEPA Magazine. George was also a long-time member of the Masonic Lodge. He became a Master Mason at St. Pauls Lodge in Middletown, RI and went on to become a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite.Over the last 40 years on Aquidneck Island, George served quietly in many ways at his church, and was often spotted in the kitchen at Hellenic Fest in the summer. George also enjoyed many years as the Managing Editor of the Hellenic Chronicle Newspaper, where he worked alongside his sister, publisher Antigone Agris.He is survived by his wife Ellen, his children Paul D. Anagnostos (Brian) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Lynn A. Cullins (Chris) of Mechanicsville, MD, and David J. Anagnostos (Carrie) of Warren, RI. He also leaves a sister Sophia Rantis of Fairfax, VA, and six grandchildren: Nicole, Christopher and Mark Cullins, and Steven, John and Jason Anagnostos. He is also survived by his two godsons Stephen C. Giotas and Thomas G. Daskal, both of New Hampshire.He was preceded in death by his brother James Anagnostos and sister Antigone Agris.Calling hours will be held on Monday, December 18, 2017 from 4:00-8:00 pm at the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Rd, Portsmouth, RI.His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 19, at 10:00 am in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, Thames St, Newport.
