Carol Ann (West) Best, age 80, of Newport, Rhode Island, passed away suddenly on August 22, 2018, in Newport, RI. She was a wonderful and kind soul. Carol enjoyed people and laughing, going out to dinner, and to the movies.
Carol was born and raised in Newport on January 28, 1938, in Newport, RI, to the late Samuel Sharp West and the late Dorothy Ann (Lewis) West. She graduated from Rogers High School with Academic Honors. Carol attended Emmanuel Church as did her parents. She was married to the late Leo John Best and had 4 children with him.
Carol worked for over 30 years at NUSC, now NUWC, at Naval Station Newport. She was an administrative assistant and managed the clerks in the accounting department. She loved her job, and was a dedicated and efficient worker. She was well liked by all.
Carol is survived by her children, Suzanne (Best) Porter of Newport, Cheryl (Best) Gibbons of Colorado, Brian Best of Georgia, and James Best of Virginia. Her sister in law, Mary Ann Best, resides in Portsmouth and her niece Kathryn Lee lives in Warwick. She was a proud grandmother of 13 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. She was loved and will be greatly missed by all.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, August 31, 2018, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI, 02840.
Her funeral will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2018, at 11:00am, at the Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Island Cemetery, Warner Street, Newport.
In lieu of flowers, donations could be made VNS- Home Hospice, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
