Carolyn H. Johnson

Carolyn H. Johnson, 85, of Middletown died Friday, October 28, 2016 at Newport Hospital of Newport, RI. She was the wife of the late Captain Ian J. Johnson, USN Ret.Born in Dundee, NY on June 17th, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Leon J. and Cora M. (Howell) Hall. Carolyn graduated from Dundee High School in Dundee, NY and from Beardsleys Private Business School in Elmira, NY. Following graduation she worked at Lakemont Boys Academy in Lakemont, NY until she and her husband, Ian, were married in 1951. They were married for 63 years until Ian passed away in February of 2014. Following their wedding in Rock Stream Presbyterian Church, they made the cross-country trip to San Diego, CA for Ians first duty station with the USS Southerland. From there they traveled all over the United States, there were jaunts to Panama Canal Zone and Naples, Italy; while for over 25 years while Ian was a member of the United States Navy.Carolyn loved music and had a long musical career starting in High School and her home church in New York - then continuing in the choirs of churches they attended on their travels. She took advantage of having voice lessons as often as she could over the years. She sang with the Navy Choristers while she was in Rhode Island and in her church choir at United Congregational Church in Middletown. She was a member of the Church Women United of Newport having the honor of being President for two years, and was active in PEO, (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Chapter 10, Newport, and was President for two years.Carolyn was Secretary/Administrator of United Congregational Church for over 22 years, starting at the church in Newport - then moving to the present location in Middletown. While at United she was very active on the Board of Deacons, the Board of Trustees and was Chairman of the Church Council, plus various other meetings and events.Carolyn is survived by her six children: Duncan Eric Johnson of Annapolis, MD, Paula L. Candler and her husband Bob of Dover, DE, Karen L. Stanton and her husband Jay of Sanford, FL, Douglas Ian Johnson of Burlington, VT, David B. Johnson of Middletown, RI, and Sandy C. Weldon and her husband Timothy of Dublin, OH, her sister Barbara A. Fleming of Brockport, NY, fifteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Donald Johnson and the sister of the late Phyllis Emmons.There will be no calling hours, but a Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 5th at 2:00pm, at United Congregational Church, 524 Valley Road, Middletown, RI.In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that Memorial Donations be made to the United Congregational Church, 524 Valley Road, Middletown, RI 02842, or the PEO, Philanthropic Educational Organization, 3700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50312.
