Charles P. Dwyer, a beloved husband, father, brother, and dedicated public servant, passed away on June 22, 2026, at the age of 80. Born on December 8, 1945, in Newport, Rhode Island, Charles was the son of Charles M. Dwyer and Joan (Harrington) Dwyer.
Charles was a long time resident of Portsmouth, with his wife, Eleanor (Faria) Dwyer. Together, they raised two sons, Patrick C. Dwyer of Indianapolis, IN, and Joseph E. Dwyer of Warren, RI. He is also survived by his sisters, Joan Kelly (Richard Kelly) and Mary Kelley (Richard Abarno). Charles was preceded in death by his sister Margaret Leib.
Charles graduated from Rogers High School and promptly entered the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17, serving during the Vietnam era. He competed in local and Marine Corps boxing matches including the Golden Gloves. Later on, he was grateful for the opportunity to be closely involved in the sport as a boxing referee which brought him to many countries around the world including Mexico, England, Germany, and Russia, among others. He served on the Middletown Police Department for many years, eventually retiring in the rank of Leiutenant. While working at the police department, Charles attended Salve Regina University for where he earned his Bachelors Degree. After retiring from the police force, Charles worked for the Middletown School Department, Cozy Cab, and Newport Grand. Later in life, he was active in the local chapter of the Marine Corps League. He was active in the International and North American Boxing Federations and was inducted into The Ring 4 Hall of Fame, The New England Boxing Ring 99 Hall of Fame, and The All Marine Boxing Team Alumni Hall of Fame.
Calling hours will be held Monday, June 29, from 4:00-7:00pm at Memorial Funeral Home at 375 Broadway, Newport. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, June 30 at 9:30 AM at St. Barnabas Church, 1697 E. Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will immediately follow at St. Columba's Catholic Cemetery in Middletown.
