Christine A. Johnston, 72, of Newport, Rhode Island, died on April 30, 2025 after a long illness. She was the wife of Martin Johnston for 47 years.
Born in Newport, RI on October 26, 1952, She was the daughter of the late Eugene and Constance (Page) Jolie. Christine was a lifelong Newporter, and proud of it! She remained good friends with everyone she met along life's journey. She grew up attending Hazard Memorial School, St. Catherine's Academy, and earned her nursing degrees from Our Lady of Fatima and CCRI. She worked at Newport Hospital as an RN for 37 years and spent many years on Turner 5. Even after her retirement from the hospital, she continued to care for her community, working for several years at John Clarke Nursing Home among others.
Outside of work, Christine enjoyed gardening. She was proud of the designs she created at her lifelong home, and even earned several ribbons from Newport In Bloom for her window boxes and gardens. Christine was a strong woman who dedicated herself fully to every endeavor. She was always involved in her children's activities and sports, cherished time with her grandchildren, and enjoyed maintaining lifelong relationships with her childhood friends. She frequently attended reunion committee meetings and volunteered her time to make sure those connections would thrive.
Christine is survived by her husband Marty Johnston, and her two sons, Peter Johnston and his wife Lyndsay of East Greenwich, and Sean Johnston and his wife Michelle of Franklin, MA and her beloved grandchildren, Ryan, Clara, Hannah, Elizabeth, Olivia, and Vivian. She leaves her siblings, Eugene Jolie and his wife Judi of Warwick, Corinne Wilson and her husband David of The Villages, FL, Celeste McTighe and her husband Larry of Selbyville, DE, and Nellann Jolie of Newport. She also leaves her nephews Derek, Zach, and Josh.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, May 04, 2025 from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 5 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am in St. Joseph's Church, 5 Mann Ave, Newport, RI. Burial will follow at St. Columba Catholic Cemetery, Middletown.
