Middletown, - Clyde A. Allen, Jr. 78, of 5 Elm Street Newport, died Thursday, October 3, 2002 at Crestwood Nursing Convalescent Home in Warren, RI. Born in Newport, RI on March 1, 1924, he was the son of Clyde A. Allen Sr. and Julia Lawrence Dutilly. Mr. Allen retired as a vocational teacher with Newport School Department, teaching carpentry at Rogers High School. After school he entered the Merchant Marines in 1940 and served in Sheep?s Head Bay until 1944. He survived three torpedo attacks in the North Atlantic; the last was three days out of Bristol, England. In 1944 he entered the US Army and served until 1958, reaching the rank of Sergeant, serving in Korea. Upon his return he joined the Middletown Police Department in 1958 and served for ten years. His career as a teacher then began in 1970 and he worked for Newport School Department until 1984. Mr. Allen was a member of the DAV, VFW, and was a charter member of the Middletown FOP, and a lifetime member of the Newport Elks Lodge. Mr. Allen had served as the first canine officer for the Middletown Police Department and also on the motorcycle corps for the Middletown Police Department. He was an honorary Colonel for the Newport Artillery Company. Mr. Allen had also built houses with the Church Community Corp while he was teaching at Rogers High School to give his students on the job training. He is survived by a son Russell S. Allen of West Palm Beach, FL, two daughters C. Colleen Curry of Clinton Corners, NY, and Cynthia A. Stone of West Palm Beach, FL., and one grandson Morgan Allen Curry of Clinton Corners, NY. A brother Earl C. Allen of Newport, RI preceded him in death. His funeral will be held Wednesday, October 9, 2002 at 11:00 am in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.
