Clyde B. Larue Jr

February 23, 1935 — July 14, 2017

Clyde B. LaRue, Jr., a proud Virginian and true southern gentleman, went onto his reward, July 14, 2017 at the home of his daughter in Portsmouth, RI. Born February 23, 1935, in Elizabethton, TN, he was the only son of the late Clyde B. LaRue and Sue LaRue. He is survived by his wife, Nan Barfield LaRue of 58 years and his daughters, Linda Bohmbach and her husband Bill of Portsmouth, RI; Marcia LaRue of Springfield, MO and Carol Sisson and her husband, Gerry also of Springfield, MO along with his Brother in Law, Claude E. Barfield of Bethesda, MD. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Nikki, Kaylee and Tyler.Clyde graduated from Warwick High School in Newport News, VA. in 1953, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1957, he was then employed at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in its testing laboratory. He became a Production Superintendent and later was chosen as one of the five design coordinators for the shipyard's facility expansion for the construction of LNG and ULCC tankers, which is now being used for Aircraft Carrier construction. This successful group of five was then hired by the country's largest naval architectural firm: John J. Mc Mullen and Associates in New York to design and implement start-up of a new shipyard for the island government of Curacao. While this project was canceled before its completion due to financial difficulties of the Island government, Clyde took his young family to Curacao while he served as the company's onsite representative for the project's early phases. The group of five continued to provide marine consulting services in the US and abroad for a few years but gradually dispersed and Clyde soon found himself in demand for key management positions in the shipbuilding industry to which he responded in his typically wholehearted manner by embarking on a multifaceted career as a shipyard production planning and management specialist that took him and his family to most of the various shipbuilding areas throughout the East and Gulf Coasts of the United States for the next twenty years. With the LaRue children leaving home to pursue their own families and interests and the death of Clyde's mother, Nan and Clyde returned to the LaRue family home on the Warwick River in Newport News, VA and Clyde joined old friends and associates in a new shipyard consulting group: Contralytics Corporation with its office in Hampton, VA. Clyde was a principal consultant and Vice President of Contralytics until his retirement in 2000. He Nan enjoyed camping, birdwatching, gardening and spending time with their grandchildren. They moved to Portsmouth, RI in early 2017 because of his declining health and to be near family. Clyde's family would like to especially thank the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport Bristol Counties for the compassion they showed him and his family during this period. Memorial donations may be made to Visiting Nurse Services of Newport Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Rd., Portsmouth, RI 02871. There will be no calling hours. Memorial services are planned for September 2nd at 11am at Trinity Church in Newport, RI. Service SEP 2. 11:00 AM Trinity Church Queen Annes Square Newport, RI, US
