David L. VonDerfecht, 89, of Middletown died Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown, RI. Mr. VonDerfecht was born March 29, 1927 in Campbell, NE. He is the son of the late August and the late Louise (Kimle) Vonderfecht. He was married to Marie A. Spero for 64 years. David attended school in Hastings, Nebraska, and lived in Gering, NE. At the age of 16, with his parent's permission, David enlisted in the Navy. During his time in the Navy, he reached the rank of Petty Officer, and was trained as a barber and a deep sea diver. While stationed in Newport, he met a beautiful woman, Marie Spero, and asked her to marry him. After leaving the Navy, he and his wife settled down in Newport, and he opened his own barber shop, Dave's Barber Shop, and ran that until he was forced to close down, to make way for the Newport Bridge. After closing his barber shop, he became a craftsman and a tiler in the construction industry. David enjoyed annual hunting trips in the Hastings and Campbell, NE. area David is preceded in death by his wife Marie and his sisters, Viola Scott and Darlene Jesse.He is survived by his brother, Irving, of Hastings, NE and many nieces and nephews.A graveside service will be held on Thursday December 22, 2016 at 11 am in Newport Memorial Park cemetery, 123 Howland Avenue in Middletown.
