On the afternoon of Monday, June 25, 2018, our mother, Dolores C. James, passed away peacefully in her sleep. Mom was resting at home which was her wish at the time of her passing. Mom was 89 years old. Dolores C. (Palmer) James was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on May 27, 1929. She was the fifth oldest child of the late Eddie Palmer and Juanita (Wanita) Bernal Palmer. Her life changed forever at the age of 9 when her mother passed away. Mom was raised by nuns at the St. John Berchmans Orphanage in New Orleans with her sisters Ethel and Pearl. Sister Marietta of Jesus took a liking to her and called mom "her little girl". Dolores was preceded in death by her sister, Beatrice and brothers Eddie II, Leon, and Emmanuel. She was also preceded by her husbands George W. James, Sr. and Stanley Jackson.She is survived by her sisters Ethel Smith Crudup of San Diego, CA and Pearl Moreino Bridges of North Chicago, IL. Mom graduated from Rogers High School. She worked at Transcom for several years until the company closed. She later worked at St. Clare Home for 11 years before retiring in 2004. There she received numerous awards for outstanding service, dedication, loyalty and valuable contribution. She was a bright light for those she cared for. In her retirement years, she volunteered at Saint Joseph Church soup kitchen. Mom made sure that her children were well cared for and involved them in sports and clubs including the Boys Club, Girls Scouts, 4-H, the Hut, and the YMCA. She enjoyed walking in the park, visiting the beach, and planting flowers in her garden. She enjoyed plays and was a member of the Providence Center for Performing Arts. She is survived by her son George W. James, Jr. and his wife Lynn of Aston, PA, her son Steven E. James, of Waldorf, MD., her daughter, Theresa M. James, of Quincy, MA, her daughter, Beatrice E. James-Cockrell and her husband Franklin of Milton, MA, her daughter, Patricia L. James, of Boston, MA and her daughter Kathryn A. James of Hyattsville, MD and currently of Newport, RI. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Troy, Tanya, Brandon, Kevin, Michael, Paul, Patricia, Marlena, Kristen, Cullen, Chyonne, Emmanuel and Holland (deceased), and twelve great grandchildren, Daymond, Xavier, Knowledge, Devon, Shayla, Rosalie, Carter, Jayden, Gabriel, Lily , 'Eila and Zaryn and a host of nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 6, 2018, from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.
