Donald Anthony McCarthy, Jr. of Portsmouth passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 27th after a valiant year long struggle with cancer. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on June 19th, 1948, he recently celebrated his 70th birthday surrounded by family and friends. He is the son of the late Donald A McCarthy and Elaine (OShea) McCarthy. He is survived by his wife, Denise, sons Kevin and Michael, brothers Jim, Ray and Bill, granddaughters Claire and Stella as well as many nieces and nephews.Don served in the United States Navy for four years, including a yearlong duty in Vietnam. A graduate of Roger Williams University, Don had a long career in industrial sales, as both salesman and sales manager. Dons positive attitude and spirit filled love, which he extended to all, impacted many people in his life. Don was a youth coach in Portsmouth during his sons growing years (Big Don to the boys/men in later years), a member of St. Barnabas, a member or Green Valley Country Club, a joyful fisherman and boater, but most importantly a son, father, husband and friend who made our lives richer.Calling hours will be held on Monday July 2nd from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Connors Funeral Home 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday July 3rd at 10:00 AM at St. Barnabas Church, 1697 E Main Rd, Portsmouth, RI.Burial to follow in Newport Memorial Park.Donations in his memory may be made to St. Barnabas Church.
