Donald N. Bergeron, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 9, 2017, after an extended illness, at the Grace Barker Nursing Center, in Warren, RI. He joins his beloved family, his wife, the late Jeanette Bobbie (Peloquin) Bergeron and his two sons, the late Donald Bergeron and the late Paul Bergeron.Born in Fall River, MA, son of the late Eugene and Rosella (Moreau) Bergeron and his stepfather, the late Joseph Tom Albert. He is preceded in death by his two brothers, the late Valmore and the late Eugene Bergeron, and two sisters, the late Lorraine Dumais and the late Elsie Guimond. Mr. Bergeron attended Msg. Prevost High School in Fall River and later moved to Marthas Vineyard and then to Dorchester, MA. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II. He later married and settled in Newport, RI. In 1952 he was hired by the City of Newport Police Department, where he worked in the Juvenile Division. He attended Babson College and in 1967 he was promoted to the rank of Detective Sergeant. During his length of service in the police department and after his retirement in 1980, Mr. Bergeron worked security for several of the more notable residential estates in Newport such as Ocean View, the estate of C. Matthew Dick the architect and son of A.B Dick, the office machine developer and Hammersmith Farm the Auchincloss estate often referred to as the summer White House for the late President John F. Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis.Donald was a long time member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Newport Police, Lodge 8 and he enjoyed getting together with his fellow police officers for meetings and social occasions. Mr. Bergeron especially enjoyed family gatherings and he leaves many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.A memorial mass in his honor will be held at The Jesus Savior Church on 1 Vernon Avenue, Newport, RI, at 10:00 AM Saturday, October 28, 2017. A private burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Beacon Hospice, 1 Catamore Blvd., East Providence, RI 02914.
