Donald P. Ardito, Middletown Fire Chief Ret., 77, of Middletown passed away Monday, September 25, 2017 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Catherine L. (Alves) Ardito.Born in Newport, he was the son of the late Antonio D. and Laura (Furtado) Ardito.Don was a 1958 graduate of De La Salle Academy. He went on to work for the Oak Street Garage until he joined the Middletown Fire Department in 1972. Don retired as Chief in 1996.He was a Communicant of Jesus Saviour Church and a member of the Middletown Lions Club, the RI Association of Fire Chiefs, the RI Antique Fire Apparatus Club and the Newport Rod and Gun Club.Besides his wife of 53 years, Don leaves his daughter Patricia Schons of Mechanicsburg, PA and his mother-in-law Catherine Alves of Middletown. Don was the brother of the late James Ardito and son-in-law of the late John Alves.Calling hours will be held Wednesday, September 27, 2017 in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport from 5:00PM to 9:00PMFuneral services will be Thursday, September 28, 2017 at 8:00AM from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00AM in Jesus Saviour Church, 509 Broadway, Newport.Donations in his memory may be made to the Middletown Fire Department, 239 Wyatt Road, Middletown, RI 02842 or to the Potter League for Animals, PO Box 412 Newport, RI 02840.
