Donald Ray Whitworth, Ph.D., passed away peacefully, surrounded by his children on June 15, 2026, in Newport, Rhode Island. He was 76.
Born in Tennessee, Don was brought to Rhode Island by the Navy and never left. He studied psychology at Roger Williams University and earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Rhode Island. Don spent the next four decades at Roger Williams teaching and becoming an expert in the field. He developed the university's master's program in forensic psychology. He was a beloved educator, mentor, and psychologist whose influence extended far beyond the classroom. Ever an independent thinker, Don was known for his sharp intellect, strong intuition, clarity, and quick humor. He was never one to sugarcoat the truth. He was the best person to go to with a deep problem or concern; he would not only listen but also give fresh perspective to help you stumble in the right direction. In 2025, Don was awarded the distinction of professor emeritus for his unparalleled dedication to student and faculty guidance, support, and mentorship.
Don was a life-long animal lover, and in return he was adored by creatures great and small. From a young age, he had an especially deep connection with horses. From 2000 to 2007, he leased Glen Farm in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He poured himself into the farm during that time, committed to rehabilitating the historic property to best serve the horses. His extensive knowledge of Western-riding and natural horsemanship was new within the local equestrian community, but it didn't take long for him to become admired and beloved.
Don lived on his own terms. He didn't waste time worrying about how other people perceived him. He was unfiltered and strong-willed, a rebellious spirit with a caring, loyal, and sensitive heart - and a hilariously irreverent sense of humor.
Don held a deep appreciation for his Cherokee heritage. He found his greatest peace in nature. He loved the companionship of his dogs and delighted in watching the birds that flocked to his many feeders and birdhouses, often with a cup of coffee in hand and his latest audiobook playing in the background.
He is survived by his children, Rachael Whitworth (Daniel Desilets), Zachariah Whitworth (Kasey Whitworth), and Dakota Whitworth (Thomas Arnold); his grandchildren, Lowe Desilets, Pace Desilets, and Anthony Dexter; and his former spouse and forever soul friend Joyce Stein.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Donald Cloys Whitworth and Billie Jean Whitworth (née Wyatt); his brother, Larry Whitworth; and his sister, Becky McCollum.
Don will be remembered for his intellect, depth, love of the natural world, and the lasting impact he made on the lives of his family, friends, colleagues, students, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. There is no one like Don; he will profoundly missed by all who loved him.
The family will hold a private burial service. A celebration of life will be announced in the weeks to come.
