Dorothy Chaves Gould, 83, of Middletown, RI passed away on December 5, 2018. Dorothy was born in Newport, RI to the late Joseph Chaves and Rosalind (Dutra) Chaves. She was the wife of the late Raymond Gould.Dorothy, or Dot, as friends and family knew her, lost her valiant battle with cancer on December 5. Dot was first and foremost a family-oriented person. Above all, she loved spending time at home with her extended family children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.Dots love of home and family was evident in everything she did cooking, baking, and offering an open-door policy to anyone who came by. She was always available to lend an ear, provide wise counsel, guidance, or just to serve as a sounding board, usually over a cup of coffee. A loving matriarch with a big heart, Dot was also a loyal friend and a protective mama bear to her family. You never had to question her love for you - it was unconditional. A quick wit and a curious mind, Dot loved to share a laugh or a joke. She enjoyed working on crossword and jigsaw puzzles or playing a competitive game of cards or Scrabble - and she never missed an episode of Jeopardy.Dot graduated from Rogers High School where she trained as a bookkeeper. She went on to work at the Newport Airport until she married and relocated to Conn. There she worked in the executive offices of Pratt and Whitney. Once she started a family, she spent the next several years as a homemaker before re-entering the work force at Newport Hospital, where she worked in the credit department for many years until her retirement. Her husband Ray retired not long afterward and they spent their leisure time traveling and spoiling the grandkids.Dorothy is survived by her daughter Kathleen Mitchell of Woburn, MA, and her grandchildren Kraig Mitchell (Alaina Richardson) of Cranston, RI and Chad Mitchell (Shannon Mitchell) of Little Compton, RI, as well 4 great grandchildren Kayden Mitchell of Seattle, WA and Alexander, Cael and Jameson Mitchell of Little Compton, RI, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Ray, Dorothy was preceded in death by her son, Stephen Mitchell, brother Joseph Chaves, sisters Mary Silvia and Margaret Gaston, and nephew Richard Gaston.Calling hours will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, December 10 at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 11 at 9:30 a.m. at Jesus Saviour Church, 1 Vernon Avenue, Newport.
