Robert Hurey Douglass was born in Sheffield, AL, February 13, 1963 to Martha Davis Douglass and Arssie Douglass, II. His parents and two siblings Geoffrey Gordon Douglass and Arssie Douglass preceded him in death. Robert confessed his belief in Christ at an early age at Saint Luke United Methodist Church and was faithful in his Christian experience. Robert and his wife Valerie were active members of The First Baptist Church of America in Providence R.I., where Robert served as a Deacon. Robert believed in the benefits of education. As a 1981 graduate of Sheffield High School in Sheffield, AL, he excelled as a basketball player and ranked in the top ten of his graduating class. Upon graduation Robert achieved an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy and ultimately rendered eight years of military service to his Country. He later earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics from the University of West Florida(1989), Pensacola, FL; a Master's Degree in Teacher of Mathematics from Providence College (2003), Providence, RI; and Doctor of Education Degree from University of Phoenix (2010) Phoenix, AZ. His passion for mathematics led Robert to work at Dynamic Systems, Inc. (1989) as Reliability Engineer for Computer Systems; Sea Corps Engineers Corporation (1995) as Weapons Research Administrator; and Consolidated Launch Technologies (1997) as Engineering Manager. He founded C.E.T.W.A.G. Inc. - Computer Engineering Technical Writing and Graphics (1997) as president and CEO, which was a celebrated minority business success. Dr. Douglass devoted the latter part of his career as Professor of Advanced Mathematics at various universities including Rhode Island Community College; Bryant University; and Providence College; and also Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School in Providence Rhode Island. Robert's passionate career for math and science was shortened by Non Hodgkin Lymphoma. Robert leaves to cherish his memory; his devoted wife of thirty years, Valerie Douglass (Warren, RI); one sister; Gweneth Douglass Powers (Anthony) of Fultondale, AL, two brothers; Ronald K. Douglass (Rena) of Muscle Shoals, AL, and Gerald D. Douglass (Charon) of Sylacauga, AL; one aunt Dorothy Mitchell of Sheffield, AL; and a host of other relatives, and friends. The family owes a debt of gratitude to our beloved cousin, Phillip Douglass. God used Phillip to "stand in the gap" as an intercessor in times of trouble. He exemplifies that: "We are to carry each other's burdens." (Galatians 6:2). Phillip took responsibility as a follower of Jesus to pray for God's intervention in the life of Robert and Valerie; and provides solace to us all. "But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren." (Luke 22:32) The family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers and acts of loving kindness during this time of bereavement.A celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at 10:00am, in the First Baptist Church in America, 75 North Main Street, Providence, RI.
