- Edward C Martins, 87, of 113 Connection Street Newport, died Sunday, August 18, 2002 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI.He was the husband of Catherine M. Sullivan Martins of Newport. Born in Newport, RI on September 19, 1914, he was the son of the late Damiao and Patrocinia Esteves Martins.Mr. Martins for many years was co-owner with his brother Manuel in the operation of Martins Grocery and Liquor store in the Point Section of Newport. Later he was co-owner with his brother Julio of Martins Brothers in Middletown. He was in the grocery store business ofr over 60 years retiring around 1979. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII, he served from March 2, 1942 to September 1, 1945 as a watertender, first class aboard the seaplane Tender U.S.S. Albemarle. He was a lifelong parishoner of St. Augustins Church. He enjoyed gardening, carpentry and automobile travel. Besides his wife of 46 years he is survived by his daughter Katherine Sandru and son inlaw Charles V. Sandru both of Newport, RI, who cared for him at home, and two sisters Beatrice Cooper and Emily Belmore both of Portsmouth, RI.He was the brother of the late Manuel J. Martins, Americo Martins, Leo D. Martins, and Julio D. Martins. His funeral will be held on Friday, August 23, 2002, at 8:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 9:00 AM in St. Augustins Church, Carroll Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown. Donations in his memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Services Of Newport Bristol Cos, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871 or to the St. Augustins Church Building Fund, Carroll Avenue, Newport, RI 02840.
