Edward G. Coderre, 84, of Portsmouth, RI, died on Wednesday, September 21, 2016, at Silver Creek Manor in Bristol, RI. He was the husband of Wanda (Perkowski) Coderre. Born on January 2, 1932 in Pawtucket, RI, he was the son of the late Wilfred and Leah (Roy) Coderre.He enlisted into the Marine Corp shortly after graduating from Sacred Heart Academy. He was first wounded at Inchon, Korea and then at the battle at Chosin Reservoir where he survived the brutal attack. He suffered serious injuries, including frost bite which resulted in amputations and spent 14 months recovering at the Newport Naval Hospital in Newport, RI. He was awarded the Purple Heart with Gold Stars and several other medals for his courage. He served in the 3rd Battalion of the 7th Marines. He was the first wounded Marine from Rhode Island to return from Korea. He later graduated from Bryant University.Ed was very active in the Boy Scouts, serving as assistant Scout Master of troop 82, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Narragansett Council. He was also very active in his church, St. Mary's Episcopal in Portsmouth, RI, serving as it's secretary, treasurer and chairman of the investment committee. He was a past president of the N.E. chapter of the "Chosin Few" (survivors of the Chosin Reservior battle) He was past president of the Portsmouth Free Public Library. He was also the treasurer of "Crop Walk" on Aquidneck Island and the Newport Ski Club. After retiring from Allstate Insurance Company, he volunteered at the VA clinic in Middletown, RI.Besides his wife, he is survived by his sons, Peter Coderre and his wife Jeanne of Lovettsville, VA and Edward P. Coderre and his wife Diana of Middletown, RI.He was the brother of the late Ralph Coderre and Alice Coderre.Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 23, 2016, from 5-8pm in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.His funeral will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2016, at 9am from the funeral home followed by a service at 10am in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth.
