Edward Hannon

December 23, 1931 — June 20, 2025

Captain Edward Robert Hannon II, USN (Ret.), 93, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2025. He was the devoted husband of Carol (Currier) Hannon for 66 years.
Born in New London, Connecticut, on December 23, 1931, Edward was the son of the late Captain Edward R. Hannon USN (Ret.) and Bernice (O'Brien) Hannon.
Growing up in a Navy family and watching his father travel the world and later teach Naval Science, Edward was destined to follow in his footsteps. He enlisted at 17 and completed his studies at the University of Louisville through the Navy ROTC program, where he was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity and played baseball. His athletic prowess even earned him a draft to the St. Louis Cardinals farm system.
Edward served with distinction in the United States Navy for 27 years, including service aboard the USS CAVALLA. During the Vietnam War, he served in the office of the Commander US Naval Forces as Force Training Officer and advisor to the Vietnamese Navy. Upon returning to the United States, he accepted various assignments throughout the Navy, ultimately serving as Deputy and Chief of Staff at Naval Reserve Readiness Command Boston, stationed at Newport Naval Station.
After settling in Portsmouth with his family, Edward became deeply involved in his community. He served on the Little League board as League President and was a devoted member of St. Barnabas Church for many years.
Edward is survived by his beloved wife Carol of Portsmouth; his daughter Regan Armstrong, her husband Richard, and their children Abby, Jacob, and Hunter, and grandchild Kane of Middletown; his daughter Holly Kinkeade and her son Angus of Catonsville, Maryland; and his daughter-in-law Naghmeh Tayebe Hannon and her son Brady of Bowie, Maryland.
He was predeceased by his son, Glenn Edward Hannon.
The family will hold a private Mass of Christian Burial and burial ceremony with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Edward's memory may be made to The Potter League and Navy Relief.
