Edward James Butler, Jr., 82, of Newport, died Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at Newport Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Irene (Lewis) Butler. Born in Newport, RI on June 25, 1932, he was the son of the late Edward J. and Lucy (Johnson) Butler. Ed served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. He retired from the Naval Systems Supply Center as a supply supervisor specialist after over a 40 year career. In 1992 Ed received the Employee of the Year from the Naval Station Newport. He was a Boston Red Sox Fan, an animal lover, and a self-appointed connoisseur of food. Ed also enjoyed hunting and golf in his younger years. He was a lifelong resident of the Point neighborhood, and enjoyed sunsets at Battery Park. Besides his wife of 51 years, he is survived by his daughter Debbie Foley and her husband Mike, who Ed loved as a son, of Portsmouth, RI.He was the father of the late Edward J. Butler III, and the brother of the late Lucylle B. Quinn. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, September 28, 2014, from 2:00-4:00pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. His funeral will be held on Monday, September 29, 2014, at 10:00 AM in the Graceway Church, 215 Forest Avenue, Middletown. Burial with Military Honors will be in Newport Memorial Park, Howland Avenue, Middletown.In lieu of flowers, please write down a memory of an experience you may have had with Ed.
