Edward J. Mcweeney

Edward James (Mac) McWeeney, of Newport passed away on July 29, 2018 peacefully at the Village House in Newport, Rhode Island after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Mac was born in Newport on September 12 th 1939. A gregarious and fun loving man, he was known for his friendliness and charm. Mac leaves behind many friends with whom he frequented Cappys and the Hibernian Hall. He loved Aquidneck Island and had a legendary social life. He also took great pleasure in traveling the country and playing golf with his friends. He was a 1957 graduate of Rogers High School and was an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Elks Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the North End Club, the 102 nd Air Control and Warning Squadron Association and the I.B.E.W. union. Mac proudly served in the United States Air Force for 31 years, achieving the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He earned several service medals and awards including the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Rhode Island Star. He worked for Bell Telephone (Lucent) over a course of 30 years in both Connecticut and Rhode Island. He was always willing to help out a friend or neighbor with their phone or cable issues. He was the son of the late Mary Soares and Herbert E. McWeeney. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Mary E. Schmidt (McWeeney). He was formerly married to Susan McWeeney (Swistak). He is survived by his two daughters Meredith L.Day (McWeeney), Michelle McWeeney Chessin and his niece, Colleen Schmidt. He leaves seven grandchildren, whom he loved dearly; Elizabeth Day, John Day, Abigail Day, Sydney Chessin, Madeleine Chessin, Colin Chessin and Conner Chessin. Visitation will take place at Memorial Funeral Home 375 Broadway Blvd, Newport, RI 02840 from 4-7 PM, Tuesday July 31, 2018. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Jesus Savior at 9:30 AM Wednesday August 1, 2018.Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery, Brown's Lane in MiddletownIn lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Village House in Newport.
