Eleanor S. Lowe

Eleanor S. Lowe, 90, of Bristol, Rhode Island, passed away on May 29, 2025, with her family by her side in the Grand Islander Nursing Center. She was the wife of the late Orin H. Lowe for 67 years.

Born and raised in Nashville, TN, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Ruth (Snider) Scruggs.

Eleanor spent her early years in the heart of the South, eventually becoming a devoted army wife and mother. Moving to from Tennessee to Alabama at 19 years old, she met her husband, Orin Lowe, while working for her family's moving van business in Huntsville, AL, while Orin was serving in the U.S. Army. Their love blossomed into a beautiful partnership that inspired all who knew them.

Eleanor dedicated her life to raising her five children-Norma, Patricia, Harry, Orin, and Samuel-with love and warmth. In 1968, she moved to Bristol, RI, to raise her family, where she embraced her role as a nurturing mother while balancing her professional aspirations. Eleanor worked as a bank teller at Old Stone Bank for eight years, later serving as a secretary at Roger Williams University. She then moved to DC supporting her husband's defense contractor career where she found work as a secretary for a lobbyist firm. The couple moved to Holden, Maine, upon retirement. In her later years, she returned to Bristol, RI, where she spent the last 11 years of her life, always keeping her sweet Southern Charm alive and vibrant. Eleanor's commitment to her career was matched only by her passion for family and home.

Eleanor's creative spirit shone brightly through her remarkable sewing skills and her love for arts and crafts. Friends and family will fondly remember her culinary talents, as she filled her home with delicious meals and the sweet aromas of Southern cooking. Eleanor's charm, grace, and innate beauty-both inside and out-endeared her to everyone she met. 

Truly, "you met her, and you fell in love with her."

Eleanor is survived by her children; Norma L. McCarthy, and husband Daniel, of Woonsocket, Patricia L. Houlik, and husband Jim, of Portsmouth, Harry D. "Danny" Lowe, and wife Elizabeth, of Providence, and Orin H. "Hew" Lowe, of Santa Monica, CA. She additionally leaves 4 grandchildren; Robert McCarthy, Thomas McCarthy, Kasey Coughlin, Jessica Hartley-Lowe, and 2 great-grandchildren; Porter and Sienna Coughlin.

In addition to her husband and parents, Eleanor is preceded in death by her son, Samuel Lowe, and her brother, J. Atwell "Buddy" Scruggs.
