Ellen Seigler

November 8, 1938 — May 27, 2025

Ellen Seigler, a vibrant soul who lived life to the fullest, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on November 11, 1938, in Newport, Rhode Island, she was the beloved daughter of Ralph and Margaret (Ward) O'Neil. Ellen spent many joyful years in Houston, Texas, where she formed cherished bonds with her "Houston Family," before returning to her roots in Middletown, Rhode Island, to be closer to her loved ones.

Ellen graduated from St. Catherine's Academy and completed her studies at Milgrim Secretarial School. She began her career at Newport Savings and Loan before making a splash at Calvani's Department Store. In a brave move that became part of her legend, she applied to be a flight attendant with American Airlines, graduating in 1961. When she boarded her first flight from Boston to Dallas for training, she humorously remembered, "Sometimes you have to do what you have to do. You have to BS your way through. No one ever asked if I had flown!"

Her journey continued in Atlanta, Georgia, where she fell in love with James Seigler, the vice president of Rich's Department Store. Together, they designed stunning store fronts and captivating magazine layouts and orchestrated many sold-out runway shows, showcasing Ellen's exceptional eye for beauty and design. The couple celebrated 52 wonderful years together, creating a life full of love, laughter, and adventure.

Ellen's adventurous spirit led her to explore the world, traveling extensively across the United States and abroad. She adored walking holidays, hiking through the majestic terrains of Portugal, Spain, and Sicily, embracing every opportunity to soak in the beauty around her.

Not only was Ellen an extraordinary career woman, but she was also an exceptional hostess and cook, known for her warm gatherings and delightful meals that brought family and friends together. She is survived by her beloved husband, James Seigler, her brother Paul O'Neil, and sister Kathleen O'Neil. Ellen was predeceased by her sisters Betty Toppa, Maureen O'Neil, and brother Peter O'Neil.

Ellen will be sorely missed by her nieces and nephews, including Kathleen Toppa Landry, James Toppa Jr., Mary Toppa, Tom Toppa of Middletown, and Allison Seigler Harrison of Columbia, South Carolina, all of whom cared for her lovingly in her final years. A heartfelt thanks goes out to Kim, Kai, and Pauline at Grand Islander for their compassionate care.

Ellen's life will be celebrated with a gathering of family and friends, where we will share stories, laughter, and the love that she spread so generously. Calling hours will be held on Sunday June 8, 2025, from 1:00pm-2:30pm at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. A funeral service will follow immediately at 2:30pm in the funeral home.
