Emily Marie Mathias

Emily Marie Mathias, age 92, of Portsmouth died Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Grand Islander Health Care Center of Middletown, RI surrounded by her loving family. Emily was born September 12, 1925 in Portsmouth, RI. She is the daughter of the late Jesse and the late Ermelinda (Nunes) Silva. She has been married to Joseph Francis Mathias for 69 years. Emily attended Portsmouth schools. She was involved with the Town of Portsmouth and State of Rhode Island Democratic party and received the woman of the year award in 2003. She also enjoyed being active with the Portsmouth Senior Center, specifically gardening, line dancing, and taking bus trips.She was an active communicant of St. Barnabas Church. She was one of the original 400 who helped start the parish and served in the women's guild and many committees. She was one of the original organizers with the St. Barnabas Parish Festival. She was also the originator of the annual yard sale.Emily is predeceased by her six sisters: Mayann Silvia, Mary Raposa, Josephine Perry, Clara Benevides, Mildred Viera, and Ann Reynolds and her three brothers Joseph Silvia, Manuel Silvia, and William Silvia.She is survived by her husband: Joseph Francis Mathias, one daughter: Veronica (Roni) Probert and her husband Richard of Portsmouth, RI, and two sons: Joseph F. Mathias Jr. and his wife Kathie of Portsmouth, RI and John J. Mathias and partner Sheryl Raposa of Fall River, MA,; five grandsons: Matthew Mathias and his wife Amanda of Attleboro, MA; Christopher Mathias of Tiverton, RI; John Mathias of Fall River, MA; Joseph Mathias of Fall River, MA; and Gregory Probert and his wife Amanda of Plantsville, CT; great grandson: Timothy Moitoza; and many nieces and nephews.Visiting hours will be held from 4:00 pm to 8:00 on Friday March 9, 2018 pm at Connors Funeral Home 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Saturday March 10, 2018 at St. Barnabas Church 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
