Eva Mary Sullivan

Eva Sullivan, 91, of Middletown passed away peacefully after a brief illness on April 4, 2017, at Newport Hospital with her daughters by her side. Born in North Westport, MA, on March 16, 1926, to Louis J. and Marie L. (Masse) Ouellette, she was one of 10 children. She was predeceased by her husband, Staff Sargent Lloyd J. Sullivan, U.S. Army.While working at Lincoln Park in Westport, she met and, in 1947, married the love of her life, Lloyd J. Sullivan, a young soldier in the U.S. Army. Mrs. Sullivan spent nearly 30 years traveling the globe with "Big Jim" wherever his duties brought them, growing caring for their family along the way, much of the time as a single parent while he was off at war.Mrs. Sullivan was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who made many lifelong friends along the way. She never drove but loved to walk. On almost any given day, one could find her walking "all over this island, carrying up to five bags at once" and refusing all offers of a ride from friends passing by.She was fond of saying "I was raised with seven brothers; I'm no frail dainty female." Through her assorted health issues and hospital stays, especially over the past few years, she remained upbeat and always had a smile and a blessing for all who had the pleasure of being in her presence - always ready to offer a hug and the sign of the cross on your back. She had a genuine love for and devotion to her immediate and extended family, always giving generously of herself and forgiving those who caused her heartache. She loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and was very much looking forward to seeing him when it was her time.Mrs. Sullivan was a true blessing to all who met her and had a wonderful sense of humor right through her final days. She had a very special way of touching hearts with her warm nature and love for all. She would drop everything and pray on the spot for anyone who had a need, even praying for the doctors and nurses treating a patient who might be in a passing ambulance. She was a participant of St. Lucy's Church and the former St. Michael's Charismatic Episcopalian Church, where she and two of her girlfriends were fondly dubbed "The Glory Girls." She enjoyed watching the 700 Club each morning, as well as, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy each night after the news. Mrs. Sullivan enjoyed bible reading and bible word search. She also loved her "two caramels and two dates" as a treat after meals.She is survived by her two brothers Robert Ouellette of Westport, MA, and Armand Ouellette and sister-in-law Dot of Rockland, MA. She is also survived by her daughters Lynn Triplett (George) of Middletown, Susan Sullivan of Middletown; Lisa Lopes (Michael) of Middletown, daughter-in-law Sandra (Bormann) Sullivan of Oshkosh, WI; and her surrogate daughter, Debra Rose, whom she "adopted" as one of her own. She is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Mrs. Sullivan was pre-deceased by her beloved son Jimmy, as well as her brothers Wilfred, Arthur, Albert, Henry, and Rene (Mick) Ouellette; and sisters Beatrice Hebert and Delia Gagnon.Her family would like to offer special thanks to the staff at the John Clarke Retirement Center who have taken such wonderful care of her over the past five years; many of whom have become like part of the family. Thanks also goes out to the fabulous ICU doctors and nurses at Newport Hospital who have provided her with nothing but top notch care with professionalism, compassion, and dignity. A special thanks to her ICU nurse Jo Ellen and Beacon Hospice nurse Elise, who were with Mom and the family during her final hours and beyond, helping to make a painful time a more peaceful transition. Special mention to Dr. Mark V. Sutherland, who was Mom's long-time physician whom she loved like a son. Though he was not her primary care provider after 2012, he continued to visit Mom as a friend, and each visit brought her immense joy.
