Evelyn Marano

d. August 22, 2018

Evelyn Georgiana (Solmo) Marano of Portsmouth lost her battle with cancer at age 70 and entered eternal life on August 22. She was the beloved wife of Frederick and the proud mother of Dr. Geoffrey Marano of Washington, DC.

Evelyn was the daughter of Peter and Evelyn Solmo and was raised on Long Island, where she enjoyed fox hunting and competing at horse shows aboard her beloved Sir James, winning numerous ribbons at the National Horse Show in New York City. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Hempstead, NY and earned her BA degree at Georgian Court University in New Jersey. After working for a time for Firemans Fund, she returned to Georgian Court and began working in the Admissions Office. She later became Associate Director of Admissions at Fairleigh Dickinson University where she was responsible for overseeing admissions activity at all three undergraduate campuses, compliance with NCAA admissions requirements, and all foreign student admissions. She left that life to devote herself to raising her son Geoffrey and working to improve life in her community after the family moved to New England.

Evelyn was a woman of character, elegance and compassion. She loved the theater, opera, and ballet. She developed a unique insight into all those that she encountered, and made a real difference in the lives she touched. She was a member of the Board of the ALS Association of Rhode Island, serving for years as its Secretary. Her other Board memberships included the Visiting Nurses Home Hospice (for whom she was also a hospice volunteer) and that of St. Michaels Country Day School, where she chaired the committee that created the successful Neighborhoods of Newport House Tours. She especially enjoyed interacting with the children she taught as part of the CCD program at St. Barnabas Church.
