Fan Castleman Benjamin

FAN CASTLEMAN BENJAMIN, 94, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2017 at St. Elizabeth Manor in Bristol, RI. Born in Louisville, KY on August 2, 1922, she was the daughter of the late David and Marie (Sanford) Castleman. Fan grew up in Louisville, KY and graduated from Louisville Collegiate School in 1940. She attended Smith College but returned home to volunteer in a Louisville hospital during World War II. She graduated from the University of Louisville and completed her graduate studies in psychology at Columbia University. For more than 30 years, Fan was a school psychologist in the public school system of Barrington, RI where she resided for over 50 years. She enjoyed many outdoor activities including tennis, golf and skiiing - and most of all, a walk on the beach in Newport and Little Compton. She was an avid reader and a masterful crossword puzzle enthusiast. Fan is survived by three sons (Gordon Benjamin III of Jamestown, RI, David Benjamin and his wife Andrea of Windermere, FL and Lawrence Benjamin and his wife Margaret of Lake Forest, IL) and a daughter (Mary Wray and her husband Edward of Portsmouth, RI). She is also survived by ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A memorial celebration of Fans life, to which relatives and friends are invited, will be held on Wednesday, May 31 at 5pm at Blithewold, 101 Ferry Road (Rte 114), Bristol, RI. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to The Nature Conservancy of Rhode Island, c/o The Goosewing Beach Preserve, 159 Waterman Street, Providence, RI 02906.
