Fernando Rego Fernandes, 88, of Newport died Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at Newport Hospital.He was the husband of Guiomar (Nunes) Fernandes.Born on March 7, 1928, in San Miguel, Portugal, he was the son of the late Francisco and Georgina (Cabral) Fernandes.Mr. Fernandes worked as a greens keeper for 42 years at Wanumetonomy Country Club and was a landscaper for 30 years for Jesus Saviour Church.Besides his wife of 64 years, he is survived by his children, Laura Peters of Portsmouth, RI, Abel Fernandes of Portsmouth, RI and Anthony Fernandes of Newport, RI, his grandchildren, Jason Peters, Sean Peters, Scott Peters, Lucas Fernandes and Matthew Fernandes and his two great grandchildren, Logan Peters and Violet Peters.Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, March 7, 2017, from 4-7pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.His funeral will be held on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at 9:00AM, from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in Jesus Savior Church, Broadway, Newport, RI.Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Stafford Road, Fall River, MA.
