Forest B Golden

October 24, 1937 — February 9, 2019

Forest Golden, 81, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on February 9, 2019.Forest was born October 24, 1937 in Boston, MA, and was raised by his foster parent, Elmira York. Forest graduated from Bellingham HS in Bellingham, MA and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern University in Electrical Engineering and continued with post-graduate work from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York. Forest began his first company, a small, local landscaping outfit with a few good friends, the first of several entrepreneurial endeavors. Most of his working years were in the employ of General Electric and its subsequent companies.Forest was an environmentalist before it was a popular pastime. He jogged past local parks in Upstate New York, recycling cans and bottles in his path. He even decorated the can car to the embarrassment of his children, driving it to and from work, emphasizing the importance of this noble cause. In his personal life, he hiked often with his family- Allegheny State Park, Bar Harbor State Park and Mt Washington. He played tennis and taught all the children to ski and cross-country ski. He was a member of the Skaneateles Ski Club in New York. His love of sailing began early with small boats he built himself. He and Nina sailed Moondance a Hunter cruising sailboat. They purchased their second cruising boat, a 38-foot Sabre Rejoice and sailed the Connecticut coastline from the Cedar Point Yacht Club. It was not long after Nina and Forest moved to RI, Nina was diagnosed with lung cancer, from which she would not survive.Forest met Susan on his quest for a new first mate for Rejoice and continued sailing the East Coast.Forests future plans to sail the Caribbean Sea were never from his vision. This new adventurous sailing team became a wonderful marriage and they wrote home tales from the sea for family and friends that only those who experienced them could vouch for.Forest continued to advance through the Newport Sail and Power Squadron and became its Squadron Commander in 2003 and 2004. He and Susan were active members of the Newport Yacht Club and were very active members of the Sea Meadow Neighborhood in Portsmouth when they were not sailing. There was not a dog nor neighbor Forest ever disliked. He was kind and folks remembered him for his loyalty, kindness and respect. He always had a smile and wave for all.Forest is survived by his wife Susan, and his children; Sheila Westerfield and husband Andrew of Wakefield, RI, Joy Golden of Auburn, NY, Douglas Mazur and his wife Lisa, of Nantucket, MA, Andrew Mazur and his wife Shannon, of Tiverton, RI, Juliette Birmingham of Windham, NH, Christopher Mancieri and his wife Patricia of North Smithfield, RI, and Derek Mancieri of Fall River, MA. He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Nina Mazur, MD, and his brother, Carl Adams.Forest died at home after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer with Susan and family present. A special thanks go out to all his friends for visits, gifts and hugs along the way.
