It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Godofredo "Fred/Freddy" Pico, a beloved husband, father, and friend, who left this world on May 28, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on July 7, 1937, in Asignan, Pangasinan, Philippines, Fred was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, decorated for his service in Vietnam, and dedicating his service to his country, which shaped much of his life, character, and career.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents Filomena (Peru) and Felix, his sisters Maria Aquino (Ben) and Lolita Blue, and his daughter Michelle. He is survived by his cherished wife, Linda Pico; his devoted daughter, Laurie Dutra and his beloved son, Brandon Pico (Danielle). He is also survived by his siblings Aurora Pico and Juan Pico as well as his grandchildren, Heather, Nichelle, Brandon, Melissa, and Stephen and eight great-grandchildren.
Fred's calling to the sea led him to a fulfilling career as a Culinary Specialist in the US Navy. Upon retirement, he took his talents to the Ney Hall Galley on Newport Naval Station, continuing to serve his shipmates for another 22 years before retiring for good. His time spent in galleys forged lifelong friendships.
He was an avid fisherman, a mega fan of all Boston sports, but loved watching and supporting local sports on the island. His greatest joy in life was fostering his son Brandon's baseball career, following him from Fifth Ward Little League, to Middletown Babe Ruth, MHS, RHS, to the US Junior Olympic team, to the Chicago Cubs Farm League, and back home to Newport and various men's leagues. Unless he had to work, you could always see Fred standing alongside the fence.
He made the best lumpia known to man, and was on-call to make them for every birthday party, baby shower, and his daughter's workplace International Days.
Fred leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and commitment to family that will forever resonate with those who knew him.
In celebration of his life, calling hours will be held on Friday June 6, 2025 from 3-6 pm at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway in Newport.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday June 7, 2025 at 9:00 am in the Memorial Funeral Home. The service will be livestreamed at https://link.memorial/pico
Burial with Military Honors will be held following the funeral service in St. Columba Cemetery, 465 Brown's Lane in Middletown.
