Frederick M. Kelly

Frederick Mayer Kelly, 94, of Newport, RI, died Monday, February 27, 2017 at John Clarke Nursing Center in Middletown.He was the husband of the late Geraldine A. (Smith) Kelly.Born on July 22, 1922 in Providence, RI, he was the son of the late Thomas Raymond and Harriet Mary (Bacheller) Kelly. Mr. Kelly was a manager in the meter department for the City of Newport's Water Department, where he was honored by the city for 51 years of service and officially named March 5th as "Frederick M. Kelly Day." He was an avid tennis player and worked at the former Casino Indoor Racquet Club, now the International Hall of Fame Indoor Club, for over 30 years. Mr. Kelly started working at the Newport Casino Lawn Tennis in 1934 as a ball boy. He was a member of St. Pauls Methodist Church. He adored his children, grandchildren and his many friends.He is survived by his children, Kenneth Kelly and his wife, Barbara, of Newport, RI, Paul Kelly and his wife, Nancy, of Middletown, RI, and Nancy LaChance and her husband, Gordon, of Newport, RI; his sisters, Elise LaParle of Portsmouth, RI and Corinne Peckham of Middletown, RI; his grandchildren, Bethany Joslyn, Alicia Kelly, Kyle Bento, Jacquelyn LaChance; and his great- grandchildren, Breyanna Baer, Brandon LaChance, Julia Lynn Joslyn and Celeste Lacey Huber.He was the grandfather of the late Neal LaChance, whom he was very close with, and the brother of the late Thomas and Edward Kelly and Norma Leach. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, March 2, 2017 from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI, with a service to follow at 12:00 p.m. in the funeral home.Burial with Military Honors will follow at Newport Memorial Park, Howland Avenue, Middletown, RI.In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Newport Rescue Wagon Fund, 21 W.
