Gardner Cy Sconyers

Mr. Gardner Cy Sconyers, 82, of Newport, Rhode Island, passed away on May 31, 2018.
Cy was born in Handley, TX to Gardner Sconyers Sr. and Helen (Routt) Sconyers Bernard. Upon the death of G.C. Sconyers Sr. Helen remarried George Bernard whom helped raise Cy with Helen. Cy was the husband of Sheila (ONeill) Sconyers.
Cy grew up in Texas and joined the Navy as a young man. He served in Korea and learned the electrical trade during his active duty, and was also involved in the recovery mission of the submarine Thresher. While he was stationed in Newport, he met Sheila ONeill, and they married in 1957. After the Navy he continued his service to the country through the Merchant Marines for several more years before moving to NUSC. He used his Navy experience by contributing to the development of the Mark 48 torpedo program. He continued a successful career with different Government Contractors, including Gould, Hughes, and Raytheon.
Cy was a dedicated member of the Masonic Order. He devoted his time to several lodges and leadership roles in the state and region. He was a member of the St. Pauls Lodge, the Scottish Rite, and St. Johns Commandery Knights Templar.
Faith communities were also a longstanding pillar in his life. He was a member of the former St. Georges Episcopal Church in Newport, and more recently the Holy Cross Church in Middletown. Cy enjoyed many days with his children on the baseball field, where he served as a volunteer leader and umpire in Newport Little League. Over the last several years, he enjoyed listening to the stories from his grandchildren.
Cy is survived by his wife Sheila Sconyers of 60 years, two sons David Sconyers and his wife Linda of Arlington, TX, and Chris Sconyers of Newport, and a daughter Gabrielle Hart of Newport. He also leaves his grandchildren, April Sconyers, Emma Sconyers, Sara Sconyers, David Joseph Sconyers, Maxwell Hart, Mary Anne Sconyers, and Niall Madden, and two great grandchildren, Damian and Oliver Vieira. He is also survived by a sister Jeanette Powell of Artlington, TX and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter Hannah E. Hart.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 6, 2018 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a funeral service to follow at 12:00 noon in the funeral home.
